Thomas Ertl is professor of economic and social history at the University of Vienna. He is interested in the economic history of late medieval and early modern Europe and in the comparison between pre-modern Europe and Asia. His most recent publications include two edited books: Europas Aufstieg. Eine Spurensuche im späten Mittelalter (Expansion, Interaktion, Akkulturation 23), Wien 2013; Handling Diversity. Comparative Perspectives on Medieval and Early-Modern India and Europe (= special issue of The Medieval History Journal 16), Delhi 2013 (forthcoming soon). The title of his paper is “Through the emotional glasses. European views on splendor and misery in pre-modern India”.
